About Department
Welcome to the Department of Sociology, Bhadrak(Auto) College, Bhadrak. The Department had its initiation in 1978 with intermediate Arts classes only. Over the years it grew and later classes at the undergraduate level were opened in the year 1982. It was only in the year 1992 that Honours classes were introduced with 16 seats where students enrolled to pass out as graduates in the subjects. The Department of Sociology at a point in time was the only Department in the entire northern region of Odisha where the most effective and excellent Honours teaching was imparted and history bears ample testimony as to how students of the Department create unbeatable records not only in the college but also in other institutions of Higher learning outside the state. Since then the department has grown over the years and the subject has started getting popular under the stewardship of teachers who took up the responsibility to mould young minds and unravel the spirit of scholarly excellence. The Department has produced a galaxy of alumni who have excelled in different walks of life. Students are imparted initial training for fieldwork in different areas of Sociological significance. The field visits to tribal pockets and village communities and interactions with campus students to name a few have been insightful and enlightening. The department conducts seminars regularly and every year the Annual National /State level Seminar Memorial lecture is organised with Sociologists Academicians both within and outside the state grace the occasion with the college Principal as the Patron and mentor. Besides students are engaged in extracurricular activities in the department showcasing their talent in various forms. The department wall magazine is the major attraction displaying the creativity and achievements of students and Alumni. It is informally a Sociology family with counselling listening to the problems of students helping them to handle the issues revolving around their lives helps them perform better Celebrating department functions for different occasions with fun and frolic is aimed at balancing work with leisure. Honouring the department Topper with the R. N. Mohanty memorial trophy every year and the Cake Day celebration on the 14th of November to celebrate the birthday of every student are a few major milestones so far. The department. The faculty is committed to the duties amidst cooperation and strong bonding together while turning hurdles into accomplishments with ease. The department aims to strive further towards excellence.

- To equip the student to critically understand and interpret social reality.
- To generate in students a distinctly sociological perspective on socio-economic and cultural reality To help the students acquire skills that will be useful to them in their personal and professional lives.
- To remain in close touch with other institutions of higher studies in sociology both at the regional and national level for mutual benefit.
- To open post-graduate classes with vocational specialization.
- To publish a journal that accommodates the creative writing of the young sociologists of the state.
