About Department
Bhadrak College was established with a view to promoting higher education in the erstwhile Bhadrak Subdivision of Balasore district in 1948, immediately after India attained independence. In those days of scant resources, eminent historian and statesman The Department of Physics started imparting degree level teaching for B. Sc. with Physics Honours from 1960-61 onwards and produced several distinguished alumni including Prof. Ashok Das, Full Professor, University of Rochester, USA and Dr. Naresh Chandra Das, Scientist at NASA. Many alumni are currently established as eminent professors and researchers, academicians and administrators in different Institutions of eminence in India and abroad (see list below). From the session 2018-19, the department has started the M. Sc. in Physics and M. Sc. in Applied Physics (Self-financing Course), which is recognised by the affiliating FM University as equivalent to M. Sc. Physics. The products of the department, having developed the necessary skills, either go for higher studies or get employment regularly in various Government and Non-government sectors as per their choice. The faculty members are engaged in teaching research and outreach activities throughout the year and the department provides an ideal platform for young aspiring physics teachers and researchers to hone their teaching and research skills as guest faculty to gain valuable experience for their future career in other places. The dedicated support staff of the department provides ideal foil and support for the academic and extra-curricular activities of students. A seminar lending library of about 600 up-to-date text books and reference materials as per latest CBCS and state model syllabus is maintained which benefits all the students. Starting with 2021, an annual convocation ceremony of the Physics Department is being organized every year to award certificates and prizes to the toppers and the best Physics Projects of UG Physics Core, M. Sc. Physics and M. Sc. Applied Physics. One National level Seminar RTPS (Recent Trends in Physical Sciences) is organized by the department every two years. Illustrious Alumni and other reputed Physicists are invited to address the seminar from time to time to inculcate the spirit of research among young and brilliant minds pursuing Physics as a career. Online lectures are organized by the department to inspire the students by giving them inputs from cutting edge research at the international level. The wall magazine “SRISHTI” has two editions: one on Ganesh Puja and the second on Saraswati Puja to inspire and showcase creativity among students of the department. Regular seminars are held every week where students present their project synopsis or short talks on any other seminar theme. The departmental library provides the students with all necessary text books and reference materials during their years of study and has over 2000 books covering all areas of the syllabi. Two monthly scholarly Journals: “Resonance” and “the IAPT Bulletin” are subscribed to by the department. The teachers use ICT through use of smart TV and smart class rooms. The successes of students and alumni of the department are displayed prominently in the college website and there is a continuity of the stream of brilliant output from the department that pours into various top-ranking institutes and universities for higher studies and research. Many of our products man the various teaching departments of the state’s Schools and colleges and guide the students for a brighter future. Some of our alumni have gone into the postal department, the army, the navy and the air force and also into banking services, revenue, statistical and administrative cadres. Notably, Mr Akash Kumar Panda (2013 Pass out), Mr. Mr. Saroj Kumar Panda (2017 pass out) and Suryakanta Parida (2018 pass out) have the State Administrative cadre after clearing Odisha Civil Services Examination. The hopes of a still brighter tomorrow for the department in all its structural and functional aspects is kept burning by the motivated team of faculty and staff who work tirelessly to motivate and encourage the students for higher pursuits.
