About Department
The Department of Economics was established in 1948 with the introduction of its undergraduate (UG) programme. In 1979, the department introduced its postgraduate (PG) programme to offer advanced education in economics and public policy, catering to the aspirations of students from Odisha. The department has nurtured many distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields. Notable alumni include Sj. Prafulla Chandra Ghadei, Former Cabinet Minister of Odisha; Sj. Badri Narayan Patra, Cabinet Minister of Odisha; Sj. Jagannath Rout, Former Minister of Odisha; and Sri Rabi Narayan Senapati, Former I.A.S. & Principal Secretary to the Government of Odisha. Since the academic year 2015-16, the department has been operating under a semester-based Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Currently, it is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, effective from 2024.

The department aims to become a centre of excellence in economics, emphasizing innovative teaching, research, and outreach activities to foster a creative and productive society.

- To prepare students for acquiring applied knowledge of economics and provide high-quality education in economics.
- To extend economics beyond the classroom by fostering problem-solving skills and rational decision-making abilities among students To disseminate knowledge in economics through interdisciplinary research and innovative technological skills to build an equitable, dynamic, and sustainable society.
