About Department
The Department of Commerce, one of Odisha’s oldest, was established in 1964-65, initially offering only a B.Com (Pass) course with 64 seats. By 1974-75, it introduced an Accounting Honours program, starting with 16 seats and expanding to meet growing demand, reaching 128 honours seats by 1980-81. Postgraduate (PG) teaching in commerce began in 1984-85 with 48 seats, and by 1988-89, honours courses in Finance and Management were added, totalling 192 seats. Following autonomy, the department restructured its honours streams into "Accounting and Finance" and "Banking and Insurance," each with 128 seats, focusing on contemporary topics. In 2015-16, the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was implemented for the UG program, aligning with UGC guidelines. Currently, the department follows a state model syllabus as well as New Education Policy (NEP) syllabus for B.Com, while the M.Com curriculum is designed based on leading Indian universities. The department remains committed to updating its curriculum for relevant commerce education.

The Department is committed to integrate all facets of commerce and management to educate and train innovative and competent human resource globally suitable for industry, business and service sector and to equip and encourage them to start their own ventures in urban or rural areas benefitting both the classes and masses.
